On January 25, according to a news release by Jinko, the conversion efficiency of its large-area N-type single crystal TOPCon cells reached a record 24.2%.

This test was led and completed by the Quality Inspection Center of Solar Photovoltaic Power System and Wind Power System of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Using Jinko's cell design, the output power of the N-type half-cell module (60 cells) has set a world record of 387.6W.

About TOPCon Technology

TOPCon technology is to prepare an ultra-thin tunnel oxide layer and a thin layer of highly doped polysilicon on the back of the battery, which together form a passivation contact structure. This structure provides good surface passivation for the backside of the silicon wafer. The ultra-thin oxide layer can make the multi-carrier electrons tunnel into the polysilicon layer while blocking the recombination of the minority holes, and then the electrons are transported laterally in the polysilicon layer and collected by the metal, thereby greatly reducing the The metal contact recombination current is increased, and the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of the battery are improved.

The TopCon structure does not require backside opening and alignment, nor does it require additional local doping processes, which greatly simplifies the battery production process. Compared with N-PERT cells, TOPCon technology only needs to add thin film deposition equipment, which is well compatible with the current mass production process and facilitates production line upgrades. At the same time, the good passivation characteristics of the doped polysilicon layer and the full contact structure of the back metal have room to further improve the conversion efficiency, which has become the entry point for the next generation of industrialized N-type high-efficiency cells.
